Some descendants of the original Rayners still live in the surrounding areas. This aim of this website is to record the history of Rayners Lane and of the Rayners that gave the lane, and therefore the Tube station and locale, its name.
Accuracy and Sources
During the 19th and early 20th century birth dates were not always recorded, sometimes more than one child would be baptised together, and the census would often round up someone’s age. Therefore ages and birthdates are not as accurate as we might wish.
Even official records would have different spellings of the same name, and during the beginning of the period we cover many people were illiterate, especially labourers, so would not have even been aware their name was being misspelt. Therefore, whilst we endeavour to be as accurate as possible there might be anomalies. This is an ongoing project and will be updated when more information becomes available.

With the increasing availability of the internet and digitisation it has become difficult to attribute or acknowledge copyright of photographs, images and even documents as it has become very easy to copy/download and redistribute without attribution.
