Daniel was an agricultural labourer and in 1871 Daniel is living with his mother Ann and brother Charles.  They also have a lodger Thomas Taylor, who was a shepherd.

Birth Register 1872

Both George and Mary Anne are shown as living at 2 Harwood Street, Camden and married on 3rd November 1872 at Holy Trinity, Haverstock Hill: Clarence Way, Camden.

Ann Emily was baptised on 3rd November, the same day her parents married.

Marriage Records 1872

In 1873 Daniel became landlord of The Victory pub.  However Daniel is still listed as an agricultural labourer so it may have been Mary did a lot of work in the pub if Daniel was still doing manual work elsewhere.

The Victory, High Street, Pinner

After a 3 year gap Daniel Charles is born in 1875 and Sarah Louisa in 1877. The next year, 1878, Daniel Charles dies, followed by the birth of Edith Mary in 1879.

Alice Maud is born in 1881. In this same year Ann Emily is recorded in the census as having moved to live with her maternal grandmother Emily Battams, who is a laundress.

1881 Census

William David is born in 1883 and George Ernest in 1885.

In 1887 Mary dies (the same year as her mother-in-law) and this may be why they then leave the pub in 1888.

In 1891 only Ann, Alice and William are in the household with Daniel.

George is now living next door with his grandmother, Emily Battams as Ann Emily previously did.  Was it lack of room or were the parents struggling financially?  Emily also has someone called William Gertrude living with her at this time.

1891 Census

Edith is a servant at 11 years old, still living in The Victory pub now run by William and Charlotte Butcher.  Also living in the pub is Charles Greenfield, a labourer.

Daniel dies in 1891 leaving the children orphans so William goes to join George living with Emily Battams.  Another child, May Goodman, who is also listed as a grandchild, is also living with Emily in 1901.

1901 Census

Edith is a servant at 11 years old, still living in The Victory pub now run by William and Charlotte Butcher.  Also living in the pub is Thomas Greenfield, a labourer.

1891 Census

In 1901 Edith is working as servant for Henry and Ellen Tew in Harrow. Edith gets married in July 1901 to Charles Greenfield, who may be related to the lodger from The Victory pub she met when she was younger.

Charles Greenfield (Edith’s husband), originally a painter, stands outside The Victory in Marsh Rd at the beginning of the century. His father-in-law, Daniel Rayner, had been licensee from 1873 to 1888.

George is living in West End Lane from 1915-1918.  George dies in 1957 and Sarah in 1966.
