George Rayner 1785 – 1846

  • Birth: 1785 in Ruislip
  • Marriage: 10th September 1806 to Martha Nichols in Harrow
  • Death: 22nd March 1846 in Pinner
  • Burial: 29th March 1846

George Rayner was the first Rayner of the family to move to Pinner from Ruislip. George always worked as an agricultural labourer.  George is already in Pinner by 1803 as he is recorded as a volunteer 1803-1813.

When they married on 19th September 1806 they both signed with ‘their mark’ because they could not write.

That same year their first child George Frederick was born, dying the next year in 1807.  1808 saw the birth of their first daughter Caroline who only lived for a year and died in January 1809.

Their second son Charles was born in 1811, but he only lived to 1816.  Subsequent children lived much longer lives.  Charlotte was born in 1813, Daniel in 1819 and George in 1820.

The 1821 Electoral Roll shows that George paying rent to a Mr Foster.

Two more children follow, John in 1823 and Susan in 1828.

Their daughter Charlotte married John James Hosking on 16th September 1838 and moved away.

The 1841 census shows him living in Pinner Place, which is likely to be his place of employment.  He probably lived in a cottage on the corner of West End Lane and Eastcote Road, now 50-54 Eastcote Road.  In Pinner In the Vale from 1955 Edwin Ware describes this as “Until the beginning of the present century, a farmhouse several centuries old stood in Eastcote Road near the junction with West End lane.”  The owner of the house was John Ellis.

1841 Census

Rates show the house was occupied by John Ellement from 1845 so it is likely around 1845 that George moved with his family (4 children at the time) to the farm workers cottage on Rayners Lane owned by Daniel Hill.

He died in 1846 from liver disease, thankfully before any more of his children.

Their daughter Susan married John Gordan in November 1850, and moved out to live in London, but died shortly after in 1851.

Martha moved out of the farm cottages in 1851 and she was then working as a live-in servant for Edward Soames at the now Tudor Cottage, Moss Lane.

Her son Daniel remained at the farm cottage with his family.

When Martha died in 1861 aged 72, she was living with Sarah Deer in Bye Street.
